INTRODUCTION TO OUR FAMILY

Sigmund and I got to know Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and each other, when we both lived and worked in Kenya in the beginning of the seventies.
We moved to Norway in 1974, married in 1975, showed and bred Giant Schnauzers as a hobby, but we never forgot the Ridgebacks. There were at that time very few Ridgebacks in Norway, and none who were shown or bred from.
In 1979, we imported our first ridgeback from Janak kennel in England.  The puppy Penda Sana of Janak lived up to her Swahili name “I love you very much”.
She became the first Norwegian-owned Norwegian champion, the first international champion from Norway and she gave birth to Norway’s first Ridgeback litter on the 27th January 1982
In 1982 we also imported our second Ridgeback from Janak,
GB and  N U Ch Nordostufial Liza of Janak, who had been most winning Ridgeback in Great Britain in 1980.

She was mated before departure from England, and gave birth to Norway’s second litter on 27th March 1982Norway’s Ridgebacks was thus increased threefold in the course of two months!
When we walked with three Ridgebacks, we knew that we were walking 10% of all the Ridgebacks in the country!

Stephanie and Sigmund with the first Ridgeback-litter in Norway

We have had 10 Ridgebacks since 1979, and have bred 12 litters.
We have bred 19 champions from the first 11 litters, and 20 Maridadi offspring have been bred from.
Many of the oldest kennels in Norway, Sweden and Finland have used Maridadi offspring in their breeding programmes.
After a prolonged break from breeding, we went back to our “source” in England, and imported the puppy Janak Lauren in 2005; she gave birth to our L-litter on 18th October 2009.

Hmmm well then..what is my weight ?
Our love for Ridgebacks and interest for showing and breeding have been with us the whole time, but the intensity of our dog work has varied according to the other challenges which life offers.
We have two fine daughters aged 26 and 21 years, a grandchild of three, and another on its way.
We live on a farm outside Molde on the west coast of Norway, and have had up to 6 dogs at a time, as well as cats, lamb, fjord horses and rabbits.
Today we have only two dogs (a Ridgeback and a German pointer) and a cat, and we shall be keeping a bitch from the litter born in October.

Sigmund works with property surveyance and I in personnel.

I am very proud of being one of four honorary members of the Norwegian Rhodesian Ridgeback Club.

Liza and Penda

A tribute to Janak Kennel
At the close of our first home pages, we would like to thank Elizabeth and Wilf Webster from Janak Kennel in England for 30 years of friendship, support and counsel.
We bought Penda as a puppy from Janak in 1979, and the top show bitch Liza in 1982. These two bitches gave birth to Norway’s first and second Ridgeback litters in 1982.
Later they exported several top show dogs to Norway and Sweden, thereby contributing to the development of the breed in Scandinavia.  We can mention Britte of Janak who was exported to Loustigens Kennel in Sweden, and Jason to the Andersson family (Jason won the breed at Crufts before his departure for Sweden) , Laara and Djan to Ridgefaret kennel in Norway, og not least Lex to Madahiro kennel – Lex was the first ridgeback to win a Best in Show at a Kennel Club show in England.
In addition, the Websters exported a number of other Ridgebacks who have not been bred from, but who have given their Norwegian families great pleasure.  Elizabeth judged the breed several times in Scandinavia, as in the rest of the world.  Elizabeth died of cancer in the summer of 2007.  We are profoundly grateful for the friendship and cooperation which we have shared with Elizabeth and Wilf all these years.
